The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to the protection of Nigerians abroad, as Nigeria assumes the leadership of Euro-African Dialogue on Migration and Development in 2025.
Alhaji Tijani Ahmed, Federal Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), stated this at a news conference on Friday in Abuja, ahead of the National Migration Dialogue scheduled for Dec. 9.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that this year’s dialogue is themed: “Beyond Borders: Celebrating Migrants’ Legacy, Protecting their Rights.”
NAN also reports that the theme underscores the invaluable contributions of migrants to the socio-economic development of Nigeria and their destination countries.
Ahmed said that the dialogue aimed to protect migrants’ rights and ensure that they lived and worked with dignity in their host communities, thus contributing to national development.
“The dialogue serves as a platform to highlight government initiatives aimed at addressing challenges of irregular migration and fostering regular migration pathways.
“It aims to safeguard migrants’ rights, provide access to decent work, ensure accurate information and facilitate safe and dignified migration,” he said.
The federal commissioner said that Nigeria’s leadership in Euro-African Dialogue on Migration and Development, also known as Rabat Process, would provide opportunities for knowledge transfer, technological advancement and enhancement of remittances and investments.
He, therefore, urged everyone to reflect on the profound impacts of migration on lives and communities.
Ahmed thanked the media for their partnership and called for raising of awareness about the benefits of safe, orderly and regular migration. (NAN)
