Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
The celebrated actor died on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, according to an announcement by his family.
Jacobs’ son, Olusoji Jacobs, announced his death in a social media post, describing the late actor as the “Lion of Lufodo” and asking the public to respect the family’s privacy as they mourn.
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo.
“Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs (MFR). 11/07/1942 – 16/09/2026,” the family stated.
The family added, “We call on all bloggers and social media influencers to respect our family’s privacy at this time.”
Jacobs, who celebrated his 84th birthday on July 11, was one of Nigeria’s most respected actors, with a career spanning theatre, television and film.
He was also a film executive and played a significant role in the growth of Nigeria’s contemporary film industry, earning widespread recognition for his commanding performances and versatility across Nigerian and international productions.
His death comes after years in which his family repeatedly dismissed reports and rumours of his passing, with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, previously assuring the public that he was alive.
Jacobs’ career established him as one of the prominent figures of Nigeria’s entertainment industry, with his work across several decades earning him a lasting place in the country’s theatre and film history.
