The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Governor Siminalayi Fubara to resubmit the list of his appointees for legislative screening and confirmation.
The lawmakers, in a resolution formally communicated to Fubara in a statement, with copies sent to Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu, faulted the administration’s multiple appointments, which were described as constitutional violations.
The statement, signed by Speaker Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, revealed that the House reviewed the governor’s appointments during its 131st Legislative Day of the Second Session of the Tenth Assembly, held on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.
The lawmakers, during the meeting, highlighted infractions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and other extant laws by Fubara through his appointments.
The Assembly particularly criticised Fubara for appointing Dagogo Iboroma as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice without seeking legislative approval. The House argued that this action directly violated Sections 192(2), 192(6), and 195(1) of the Constitution.
The lawmakers further condemned the swearing-in of 19 individuals as Commissioners in the Rivers State Executive Council between May and October 2024, without undergoing the required screening process. The list includes Prince Charles Beke, Collins Onunwo, Solomon Eke, Peter Medee, and others.
The Assembly further pointed out similar procedural violations in the appointments of members of the Rivers State Bureau on Public Procurement and the Rivers State Local Government Service Commission, asserting that these actions contravened established state laws.
Emphasising the need to uphold democratic principles, the House demanded that Governor Fubara submit a list of nominees for all positions requiring legislative approval within 48 hours.
The lawmakers warned that failure to comply would pose a threat to governance and the rule of law in the state.
