Pro-emergency rule protest breaks out in Rivers

Torrents of women staged a rally in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital on Monday to back the declaration of a state of emergency in the state.

Recall that President Bola Tinubu wielded the big stick in March 2025 by declaring a state of emergency in the state and subsequently suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Ordu, for six months

The president, who excused the judiciary, but included the state House of Assembly in the extreme punishment, appointed a former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibot-Ette Ibas as the sole administrator of the state for the period.

However, barely four days ago, some supporters of the suspended governor staged a protest demanding the reinstatement of Fubara.

The pro-emergency rule protesters, in reaction to Fubara supporters’ rally, queried their motives, noting that the state is in need of peace and not the embattled governor.

The women carried placards that read, “State of Emergency Is Constitutional,” “No Tribal War in Rivers State, No More Fubara,” “We Need Peace, Not Fubara,” among others.

Speaking to journalists, one of the organisers of the rally and former Vice Chairman of Etche Local Government Area of the state, Hon. Gladys Nweke, said, “What we are doing here is a solidarity march in support of the state of emergency in Rivers State.

“Since the declaration of the state of emergency in Rivers State, there has been peace. We no longer hear about killings and cult activities in the state.”
